Hurrah Olympia!

Have you seen the opening of the Olympics last night? Usually I don’t like to see these shows, I feel I am too young (and maybe not mainstream enough) for these shows. Last night we had dinner and we zapped through the Russian TV channels when we found the opening ceremony. We were just watching the last 3rd of it, but I got disgusted very quickly. What happened to the Olympic spirit? It’s just getting commercial like everything else. What I expected to see, was art and entertainment and not a dancer in a Roman pose on a Dugati Motorcycle or a Ferrari F1 car spinning on the stage. Well Forumula 1 is big business and so is Olympia these days.

What is the relation between Ferrari, Olympia and the Winter Games?

Its good that the Olympic flag was not carried in by some “cleanâ€? young white virgins, but actors and super models of all nations. I guess it says it all: Actors. Yes, they tried to be politically correct showing Black, Asian and Caucasian…. Wait a minute, did I forget somebody? What about the other tribes. Well, ok only so many people can carry the flag and apparently there were fierce fights among various celebreties, about who would carry the flag. The actors, led by Sophia Loren, handed the flag to the military, who were dressed in some modern fashionable garn, not their regular uniforms. Military uniforms are not very popular these days and may be offensive, so lets just change them against some fashionable white winter clothes. What happened to the courageous Alpini with their strange hats and strong traditions? They didn’t run as usual. These guys usually run, whatever they do, but probably the cameras would have not been able to follow them. Or were they tired, because of their extended stay in Iraq? That is another subject. At least the Alpini were still allowed to war their “Seppl hats” with the feather. So, finally the white and clean flag of Olympia went up into the Italian sky. I think, it should be changed into green. Yes, the same colour dollar notes have. That would be more appropriate than white.

At least the Mongolians had fun. Did you see the speeches of the organizer and the president of the Olympic committee? Who cares what these wealthy bribed millionaires have to say, but just seeing the Mongolian delegation in the background made my day. They were so happy, smiling all over their faces. I guess they fell asleep with a smile, while others take another doping pill to be able to beat the competition next day. What counts for the Germans, the US athletes and others alike is just to get a place on the podium and to please their sponsors. The Mongolians probably don’t have big chances to get a medal, but they came in the original spirit of Olympia: Being there, being a part of it, is what counts. The Olympic Games used to be a festivity for the understanding of the cultures and to promote freedom, peace and the sports. Now it turned into a big commercial for Coca-Cola, Ferrari and the alike.

Usually I am quite sentimental on things like this. When they play the national anthem (no matter which one), I get the chills and feel kind of emotional. This time I only felt disgust. Well, do not let me bring you down. Enjoy “your Olympics brought to you by … the ITALIANS. That’s how it should be, because Italy has so much more to offer than red horse powers. I guess, I’ll try to boycott the games as much as I can. But then again, they will be present for the next 2 weeks, wherever I go. There is no running away from Olympia, not even with dope(ing).

Oh, and who designed these green clothes for the German team…. Aghhh!!!! At least they have the right colour. What’s the colour of money … ;-)
